Fear of Failure: It Keeps Us Going and Holds Us Back
Waking Times
Video – How do we strike the right balance between our own ambitions and what the closest people to us expect of us? Below, J.K. Rowling, author of the best-selling Harry Potter book series, delivers an inspirational commencement address that elaborates on how the world is quite eager to give us a set of criteria of how to live, and it is often our fear of failure that keeps us going. But failure does not always mean the end, and it should not be feared. As J.K. Rowling explains:
“…failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free.”
