Enlightened Politics – Is that Like Fat-Free Potato Chips?

Most of us have just given up. There is a reason our youth are called the silent generation. But we apparently aren’t as jaded and apathetic as one might suspect. Maybe deep down in all of us there is a desperate hope that things really can change. Optimist or fool – you are right either way, but judging by the 1.6 million (and growing) hits of this brazen YouTube video that breaks down the glass mass consciousness with a few wordy rocks, there is still a glimmer.

And there should be.

After reading this, however, you might say it’s a fire as big as Pele’s volcano.

  • What if there really were governments by the people, for the people again. Remember the “I have a dream. . .” speech or Gandhi’s promise that we could change the world if we were the change we wanted to see? People like John Bunzl of Simpol fame certainly keep those hopes alive. If you haven’t heard of Simpol, you will. According to Bunzl, it is possible we haven’t solved problems like Libor scandal and special interest money in our elections because we have looked only locally for solutions. It is the quest of Simpol to break the cycle which governments repeatedly find themselves in (debt crisis, housing crisis, budget crisis, health care crisis, drug crisis, need I say more?) by asking politicians to act globally. Simultaneous implementation would ensure that “no country became uncompetitive as a result of pursuing policies that were right for the planet and which embodied people’s higher aspirations.”

Just take that in for a minute. You may need to take a deep breath.

If you still think it is impossible, consider that several dozen countries around the planet are already taking part in this process, and more are joining in to make pledges every day.

Look at the growing Occupy movements that have shaken up social systems and government policies all over the planet. The occupy movement may have started with a strong middle finger toward Wall Street and Main Street, but it also spawned movement around the globe. It went to Ireland – Occupy Dame Street. It went to Australia – Occupy Melbourne. It went to the UK, and so on. A small, grassroots cry of desperation was the shot heard round the world. It started change – massive change.

Social media is doing its part too – like a global temperature check it creates more transparency than ever before. It is allowing us to get the SHIFT this or else vibe out to the entire planet. We each know that we aren’t standing alone, and this, in turn gives us greater momentum towards change. Kony 2012 has gone viral. Puppy mills were stopped in China with Facebook and Oodle postings. Libor scandal is causing hundreds of the CEOs and upper management of banks to be charged criminally.

Maybe Americans are still a bunch of lazy bums who like to sit on their sofas watching Netflix and eating potato chips, but many of them are doing much more, and even those coach surfers on the Internet are causing change. International communities are reaching across political and national boundaries to make change the old fashioned way – by voting and speaking their minds. . .demonstrating in the streets. . .writing letters, and the new-fashioned way. . . talking it up on social networks. It gives you hope for the human race. We aren’t all lazy, greed-driven zealots after all.

This is happening. Whether you’ve become too tired to care, too energetically fried, and sun-spot weary to lift another finger, you’re in the last mile of our super marathon. We’re in it together, so even if you have to lick potato chip salt from your fingers while gasping on assisted oxygen from a tank, we collectively have each other’s backs. It is time to take the last step. Make the last cry. Demand change just one more time, and then, sit back and watch it all unfold. The next earthquake won’t be in Japan or Indonesia. It will be one of a completely different magnitude.
