In September of 2017, the world’s greatest football player, Tom Brady, published a book about the secret habits and practices that have helped to keep him performing at such a high level for so many years. Entitled, The TB12 Method: How to Achieve a Lifetime of Sustained Peak Performance, the book is a reminder that what we allow into or body and mind can have serious impacts on our performance.
Brady truly is the master of sustained peak performance, and his recent Super Bowl LIII win highlights the fact that he has been able to keep his body in tip-top shape for much longer than any other athlete. While full of useful information and insight, in the book you’ll find a few key hints at how Brady avoids common environmental toxins in order to help keep himself in the game.
Firstly, Brady doesn’t eat GMO foods. His whole diet is based on reducing and preventing inflammation in the body, and Brady’s personal chef, Allen Campbell, makes sure that foods which are not anti-inflammatory rarely make it on to Brady’s plate. GMO’s are excluded from his diet, and Campbell prefers to prepare organic, locally-sourced, non-gmo fruits and vegetables for the bulk of Brady’s meals.
In a 2016 interview, Chef Campbell discussed his philosophy of food:
“My philosophy starts in my own life, and with my own lifestyle and eating habits. I make conscious decisions to buy local and organic, and to stay away from GMOs, and to think about the future of the planet and the future of humans.” [Source]
In addition to reducing exposure to GMO’s, the Brady’s are known to avoid having electronics and cell phones in the bedroom, because proper sleep is absolutely critical to his performance, and such devices are well-known to disrupt sleep patters.
Removing electronics from the room especially important now that smart phones are so ubiquitous. As Brady notes in TB12:
“…turn off all your electronic devices a half hour before you go to sleep. If there’s a TV in your bedroom, consider putting it somewhere else. It’s a bedroom, not a tech cave. My wife doesn’t even allow cellphones near the bed.” [Source]
We are learning that sleep is one of the most under-appreciated aspects of human performance, and also learning just how much of an effect electrical pollution has on our ability to sleep. As podcaster and author of, Sleep Smarter: 21 Essential Strategies to Sleep Your Way to A Better Body, Better Health, and Bigger Success, Shawn Stevenson says:
“…make it a mandate to turn off all screens at least 90 minutes before bedtime in order to allow melatonin and cortisol levels to normalize.”
“Mariana Figueiro, of the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic, and her team showed that two hours of iPad use at maximum brightness was enough to suppress people’s normal nighttime release of melatonin. When your melatonin secretion is thrown off, it will intrinsically throw off your normal sleep cycle. ”
Finally, Brady is also known to not drink fluoridated water, which is a known carcinogen. Fluoride has been added to most American water supplies for decades. Even though more research continues to indicate that it is toxic, dangerous to the brain development of children, and may even cause dental fluorosis rather than help it, fluoride is still a part of the American diet, unless you care about being your best, as Brady does.
The message here is that in order to achieve peak performance you have to not only cultivate your skill, but you also have to protect yourself from the things that will slow you down and prevent you from feeling and performing your best.
