The Islamic holy month of Ramadan has brought with it waves of intense violence in 2017 with hundreds of attacks around the world of Muslims targeting Muslims for death and carnage. Of course, this is the trend, and while some blame ISIS, and some blame Wahhabism, Saudia Arabia, the global war on terror, the New World Order, the Illuminati, foreign occupation, oil companies, drone strikes, or whatever else we can think of to blame, the fact remains that there is very little conversation about peace and the overwhelming stupidity of killing innocent people. .
So few are indeed calling for de-escalation and the end of senseless violence, but a recent music video produced by a Kuwaiti mobile telecommunications company, Zain, offers a refreshing look at how the Islamic world can look within and demand humanity and peace in a time of absolute chaos and insanity.
The artist in the video is Hussain Al Jassmi, an Arabic-language singer from the United Arab Emirates. He calls for the worship of Allah ‘with love, not terror,’ and the video features scenes from a number of high-profile terror attacks. Released for the start of Ramadan, the video begins with a child’s voice and the statement:
“I will tell God everything. That you’ve filled the cemeteries with our children and emptied our school desks. That you’ve sparked unrest and turned our streets to darkness. And that you’ve lied.”
The scene depicts a man preparing a suicide bomb vest for an attack on a weeding, but is chanted down in the streets with a much-needed message of love and unity.
The message is so desperately needed in this darkest of hours, and the public is ready for it. The video has over 8 million views in a single month. While it’s tempting to blame one side or another for the violence and wholesale destruction in the Middle East, real progress can only come when we focus on the possibility of peace.
